IgE Isolator for Asthma
May 2, 2017 | Terry Sharrer
Asthma and allergy sufferers present higher levels of blood immunoglobulin E when exposed to a chemical trigger. Occasionally, this can be fatal. In designing a remedy, engineers at the Medical University of Vienna have built a column IgE isolator that works something like a hematopoietic stem cell isolator. Beads coated with seaweed-derived sepharose trap the IgE, while the rest of the blood flows through. So far, it looks like this approach would be repeated weekly during the allergy/asthma season.
