Precision Eye Surgery Robot

Last January 12th, surgeons at University Hospitals Leuven in Belgium used a robot to insert a microneedle in the retinal vein of a patient who had a blood clot in that vein. They then injected a thrombolytic drug that dissolved the clot. The robot was designed and built specifically for this delicate procedure which requires a steadier “hand” than any human’s. The retinal vein is about as thick as a human hair, while the needle the robot inserts is a third of that size. MORE
