New Design for Extended Release Pills

Most extended release drugs have polymer coatings that dissolve slower in the low pH of the stomach and faster in the higher pH of the small intestine. But, even so, extended release lasts little longer than a single day. Researchers at MIT and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have designed a completely new concept—using a star-shaped device that remains in the stomach and releases its drug cargo over a two week period.
