Magnetic Separation of Bacteria in Blood

Since the 1980’s it has been possible to separate hematopoietic stem cells from a bone marrow harvest using antibodies attached to magnetic beads. Now, researchers in Switzerland and at Harvard have applied the same idea to draw bacteria out of whole blood, as during blood poisoning. The key to this was finding an antibody that adhered to nearly every type of bacteria found in blood poisoning. MORE
