Kyocera’s Optical Blood Flow Sensor

Kyocera (Kyoto, Japan), founded in 1959 as the Kyoto Ceramics Company, may be best known in the US for its smartphones, printers and ceramic cutlery, but it is a huge corporation that manufacturers solar panels, artificial joints, liquid crystal displays and numerous other industrial and consumer products. This piece describes its new subcutaneous blood flow sensor, which is roughly the size of three grains of rice, designed for small devices and wearables. With the sensor placed in earbuds, it could monitor low blood pressure and dehydration in certain critical situations. MORE
