Thermophotonic Lock-In Imaging for Earlier Detection of Dental Caries
November 15, 2016 | Terry Sharrer
Conventional dental x-radiographs do not have the specificity and sensitivity to detect early dental cavities, when they are most repairable. Engineers at York University in Toronto have taken a step toward earlier detection with what they call thermophotonic lock-in imaging. By their description: “The system incorporates intensity-modulated laser light along with a low-cost long-wavelength infrared (LWIR; 8 to 14 μm) camera, providing diagnostic contrast based on the enhanced light absorption of early caries.” Moreover, the equipment costs less than dental x-ray machines.
