“The Window to the Brain” Project
November 8, 2016 | Terry Sharrer
A collaboration between bioengineers in California and Mexico has brought forward an intriguing concept—a window in the skull that enables laser therapies for several brain disorders. The window is made from a transparent ceramic of yttria-stablized zirconia that is placed between the scalp and the brain surface. Microneedles inject a drug that temporarily makes the scalp transparent, and lasers then would be able to apply their energy to specific locations of tumors, TBI’s, neurological and neurodegenerative diseases.
