Organovo’s 3-D Printed Liver Patches for Transplants
November 8, 2016 | Terry Sharrer
Much of the work in liver tissue regeneration has focused on making micro-organelles for drug testing. But San Diego-based Organovo is developing a 3-D printed tissue patch that supposedly integrates into an existing organ to improve function. In pre-clinical testing with animals, Organovo claims their technique “showed engraftment, vascularization and sustained functionality of its bioprinted liver tissue. Those studies also indicated stable detection of liver-specific proteins and metabolic enzymes.” While an IND application isn’t expected to go to the FDA for five years, Organovo may do clinical testing outside the US.
