Gene Therapy for Aging

Telomeres
Whether or not Elizabeth Parrish turns out to be the hero of her own story, only time will tell. She is the CEO of the biotech company BioViva (founded in 2015; Bainbridge Island, WA) who has undergone a gene therapy of her company’s devising—using an adeno-associated viral vector to deliver a transgene (gene for telomerase?), intending to lengthen chromosomal telomeres. If this report is to be believed, the procedure added approximately 20 years of longevity to Ms. Parrish’s life. Presumably she knows that cancer cells use a similar process to achieve their “immortality.” MORE
