The first bacterium shown to cause a human disease was Mycobacterium leprae—the pathogen that invades the Schwann cells which protect nerve axons and results in leprosy. Several other peripheral nerve diseases result from damaged Schwann cells, and to address that, researchers at the University of Newcastle (UK) have found that with an application of certain growth molecules, adult skin cells can be transformed into Schwann cells for nerve repair.
