Hospitals’ Property Tax Exemption

This piece is not our usual subject matter, but it does impact an enormous sector of healthcare. Most hospitals in the US are “community” types, which have tax exempt status for providing indigent care. Since this model began in 1946, the line between “non profit” and “for profit” has blurred, and now that the Affordable Care Act is legally upheld, indigent care should be less of a burden on the community, and the community tax-exempt hospital. If the New Jersey court decision is upheld and spreads to other states, the business side of “in sickness and in wealth” will change dramatically. MORE
