Automated Skin Mole Scanner/Analysis

“Dermascanner,” from the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (Magdeburg, Germany) looks like one of those whole body scanners used in airport security. But in this case, the scanner used multiple cameras, 3-D sensors and computational analysis of the entire skin surface resulting in the classification of perhaps hundreds of moles that may be progressing to cancer. The system has a resolution of one half millimeter, and thus can determine if a mole is growing horizontally or vertically or a more troubling random shape. MORE
