The First 1 million Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplants

Interest in the possibility of transplanting bone marrow resulted from studies of atomic radiation—both bombs and reactor accidents. Donnall Thomas published this subject in 1957 and shared the Nobel Prize for his work in 1990. He died at age 92 in 2012, but by the time he passed away a million hematopoietic stem cell transplants had been performed, much of that coming after 1992 with the development of the hematopoietic stem cell isolator.
