Listening to Arthritis

Any sufferer of arthritis might be right in thinking their joints are “screaming.” Indeed, an arthritic knee makes a variety of indicating sounds, and researchers at Lancaster University have developed an acoustic emission sensor that is inexpensive and convenient enough to measure change in a joint over time, where therapy could be working an improvement. It’s worth noting that ancient physicians relied heavily on listening for indicative signs of morbidity, but despite development of the stethoscope, medical acoustics has fallen off, at least until now.
