Mouthpiece that Measures Potential Head Injury
According to CDC figures, there are some 3.8m sports related concussion injuries annually, mostly among youth players. But, in fact, most concussions go unreported because coaches, officials and parents often cannot easily determine the severity of a head injury. There has been much attention to football helmets with impact sensors, but many sports—particularly soccer, rugby, and basketball—don’t have helmets. A possible solution in these activities could be a mouthguard—with accelerometers, wireless transmitters, and LED lights—that can change color relative to a head impact and send a warning to the coach or others monitoring concussion safety. Force Impact Technologies (Los Angeles, CA) is developing such a device which it expects to market for about $130. MORE
