Platelet Bioreactor
With a “bone-marrow-on-a-chip” bioreactor, researchers at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital have been able to culture blood platelets, bringing artificial blood another step closer. “By mimicking bone marrow’s extracellular matrix composition, stiffness, micro-channel size and shear forces, [the device] persuades the megakaryocytes to produce anywhere from 10 to 90 percent more platelets than was previously possible.” MORE
