You’ll have to go to the Nature Communications article cited in this piece to find which light-sensitive protein the South Korean scientists (Institute for Basic Science, Daejeon, Korea) used to make mammalian cells sensitive to blue light, but they claim they were able to induce specific neuron growth and differentiation with their optogenetics technique.
