Sound Amplifying and Analyzing Stethoscope
July 29, 2014 | Terry Sharrer
The human body is a noisy environment, not even counting external sounds. Ancient Chinese physicians trained to detect hundreds of impulses even before stethoscopes appeared, but diagnosis by sound isn’t as keen an art as it once was. Consequently, stethoscope makers, like Littmann, have developed high tech instruments that can amplify, filter and transmit recordings via computer or smartphone. This piece describes such a stethoscope from Think Labs Medical (Centennial, CO) that can amplify chest sounds 100x and analyze the audio via a smartphone app. At $499, the Think Labs Medical “One” is about $150 more expensive than the Littmann Model 3200.
