While research into artificial blood continues, a Boston company, Platelet BioGenesis, is developing a microfluidics bioreactor that can stimulate stem cells into becoming megakaryocytes, which are the source of platelets. Platelets today are separated from whole blood, but while refrigerated whole blood has a shelf life of several weeks, platelets last for only five days after extraction and two of those are taken up with viral contamination testing.
