Growing Cartilage from Stem Cells

Some 6,000 to 8,000 babies are born each year in the US with microtia—a non genetic birth defect in the womb resulting in small or misshaped ears (one or both). Researchers at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London have found a solution for this in growing normally shaped ears from mesenchymal stem cells derived from the baby’s fat tissue. The cells are cultured on a porous polymer nanoscaffold and develop into cartilage. MORE
