Hardly a day passes without news of another smartphone device, app, or cloud information integrator for health monitoring. This piece describes Cornell University’s “smart CARD” system which includes an adapter that fits over the iPhone’s camera and an app that checks total cholesterol levels (without differentiating between “good” and “bad” lipids). This is not commercially available yet, but when it comes, it will allow a person to put a drop of blood on a test strip, on which the iPhone’s camera and app then carry out a colormetric analysis, resulting in a value.
