Bionic Eye Implanted
March 25, 2014 | Terry Sharrer
Last year, the FDA approved a vision device system consisting of a pair of glasses with camera, a belt-worn video processing unit, and an electrode-nerve interface for retinal implantation, all with wireless connectivity. Twelve medical centers are participating in the surgery for this “Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System” (from Second Sight Medical Products, Inc., San Fernando Valley, CA), and this past January, surgeons at the University of Michigan did the first implantation for a patient with retinitis pigmentosa. The device does not fully restore normal sight, but it does allow patients to see figures and light. MORE
