Magnetically Directed “Spermbots”

Sperm swim to their destination, but they don’t always arrive safe and sound or on target. Thinking about how to improve natural fertilization, researchers at the Dresden Institute for Integrative Nanosciences in Germany have devised tiny tubes, made from titanium/iron film, into which the head of the sperm can fit while the tail provides locomotion. Magnetic guidance moves these living robots to near an egg’s surface where a change in temperature releases the tube. There must be movie rights involved in this work. MORE
