FDA Approves Illumina’s “Next Generation” Sequencer

Last November, the US Food and Drug Administration gave approval for the first time that high throughput-DNA sequencing can be used for diagnostic testing. According to NIH Director Francis Collins, this means “any lab can test any sequence for any purpose.” Illumina’s “next generation” machines, which make sequencing faster and cheaper, provided the basis for the FDA’s decision. Illumina now claims that the race for the $1,000 genome has been won. MORE
