Bio=patch for Dental Implants
With aging come both changes in chewing habits and the likelihood of periodontal disease, resulting in gum deterioration and bone loss. Without sufficient bone, dental implants cannot hold fast, but scientists at the University of Iowa have developed an implantable patch that rebuilds bone. The patch is of collagen with “seeds” (actually plasmids) of synthetic DNA that stimulate bone regeneration. Bone patches also can be used to repair traumatic skull injury or to restore bone loss from birth defects. MORE
