Kaiser’s Model Hospital at Garfield Innovation Center

In a former 37,000 sq. ft. warehouse, Kaiser Permanente created its Garfield Innovation Center (San Leandro, CA) for testing new technology and workflow improvement. The facility now has mock up of a patient room, O.R., and ICU unit. Among the simple procedures the staff has developed is nurses wearing a sash when they are preparing medications—which, when implemented in KP hospitals, brought an 85% reduction in errors. Another advantage of Garfield is having a place where technology salesmen can demonstrate their products without being intrusive on real hospital floors. MORE
