First Whole Genome Sequencing for Autism
October 22, 2013 | Terry Sharrer
With 99 individuals in the study (32 having autism spectrum disorder; the others being relatives of the 32, plus three people without autism for controls), researchers at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto performed whole genome sequencing (rather than exome sequencing) to create a library of genetic variations for this disease. Before this study, only 20% of patients presenting autism had a known genetic basis of their illness; this study increases that rate to about 50%. MORE
