Human Cloning: “Fasten your Seat Belts; this is Going to be a Bumpy Ride”

2014 will be the centennial of Hans Spemann performing the first successful nuclear transfer experiments in embryology (he won the Nobel Prize in 1935). By 1978, nuclear transfer played the starring scientific role in the si-fi thriller “The Boys from Brazil”—about 94 perfect clones of Adolph Hitler. For many years, up to the present, human cloning has been the hobgoblin of gene therapy thinking, and it has been set aside from consideration. This piece, however, brings human cloning back into the spotlight and we’ll see if its wonders now outweigh its worries. MORE
