Prenatal Genomics
July 9, 2013 | Terry Sharrer
There’s a strong chance that sometime this year a person’s complete genome will be sequenced before birth. For some time it has been known that fetal DNA can be found in the mother’s blood to the extent that all of a fetus’ genome is accessible that way, and it is a far less invasive approach than amniocentesis or CVS. There are technical and commercial mountains to be climbed before prenatal sequencing becomes widely available, but its social acceptability may be the Mt. Everest to overcome. It may be worth noting that since May 29, 1953 more than 3,100 people have actually climbed Mt. Everest—evidence of rare possibilities becoming almost commonplace. MORE
