With an aging population, the 400,000 annual pacemaker implantations are likely to rise, but with MEMS and nanotechnology, a pacemaker that’s smaller than a penny, with a battery that’s recharged by heartbeat itself, the device of choice may be quite unlike those of today. Still, any pacemaker’s proper function has to be detectable, and this piece reviews some of the practical problems inherent with any device’s signal. MORE
