Telerehabilitation from Home

The range of telemedicine applications continues to expand. This piece describes a telerehabilitation device, designed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communications Systems (Berlin, Germany) which includes an internet connected “physio box,” a wearable mobile vital signs sensor and personalized exercise programming. First, a physiotherapists creates an exercise program for the box, which the patient takes home and hooks to a television. The box also contains a camera which turns observed movement into a stick figure. An on-screen avatar then leads the patient through exercises at home, while the mobile sensor records data that transmits back to the physiotherapist who can adjust the program as needed. MORE
