“Reading” Your Gait
March 19, 2013 | Terry Sharrer
What might be learned from tracking a person’s gait? How rapidly Parkinson’s or arthritis is advancing might be measured; the fit or misfit of a prosthetic might be determined; and if the sensors were sensitive enough heart rate and blood pressure might be tracked through the feet. This piece, about pressure sensors from Tactonic Technologies (New York, NY) isn’t about healthcare applications, but it doesn’t take much imagination to see how pressure sensors could be used for, say, monitoring children, elders, and anyone with a movement disorder. The company sells its “Sensor Development Kits” for $3,500 (at its website under Products). MORE
