Using an optoacoustic lens that converts laser light to high-amplitude sound waves, engineers at the University of Michigan have pioneered the concept of “non-invasive surgery.” By focusing the ultrasound, the device generates shockwaves and microbubbles that can resection tissue of 75 x 400 micrometers precisely enough to be a potentially useful alternative to minimally-invasive techniques in certain circumstances.
