Scanadu’s “Scout” Tricorder

The $10m X Prize competition for a Star Trek-like “tricorder” already is bringing some new consumer diagnostic products to market. Sometime this year, Scanadu (located in the NASA Ames Research Park, Moffett Field, CA) will offer its “Scout” device for sale at $150 per unit. A user holds the palm-sized device to the temple to record heart rate, temperature and blood oxygenation. That data goes to an iPhone via Bluetooth transmission. The company also is making disposable urine and saliva test kits, but this piece doesn’t say how those values will be aggregated through a smartphone. MORE
