“First Inventor to File” Major Change in US Patent Law

It’s worth remembering that Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell filed their patent caveats for the telephone on the same day, Feb. 14, 1876. A battle ensued over who was the first to invent—then the standard of US patent law since 1790—rather than who was first to file. Beginning in March, 2013, a major change to the patent process will come into force, giving priority to the first inventor to file, rather than the first to invent. MORE
