Stem Cells for Age-Related Macular Degeneration

This piece reports on two groups, in Japan and the United States, that are applying stem cell strategies to treating age-related macular degeneration, The Japanese team at RIKEN (Kobe) is using induced pluripotent stem cells, injected into the eye to restore the lost retinal pigment epithelial cells. The Americans at UCLA are working with embryonic stem cells to reconstruct blood vessels in the retina. The Americans have already gone to a clinical trial, but the Japanese may not be far from that step. MORE WITH VIDEO
