Magnetic Coils as Neural Implants

Deep brain stimulation is now a therapy for such neurological disorders as chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis. However, in a study at Massachusetts General Hospital of tiny micromagnetic coils implanted in the brain, researchers demonstrated that these coils activated neurons without presenting some of the drawbacks of DBS leads. They also imagine the coils could be used as a new generation of pacemakers. MORE
