Individuality of Concussions
August 28, 2012 | Terry Sharrer
About 30% of mild concussions cause permanent impairment, but which patients are likely to have that outcome at the time of diagnosis is hard to predict. Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Montefiore Medical Center, however, have developed a new MRI technique that images water diffusion in white matter and relies on a software analysis that can identify microstructure abnormalities. The images, which show highly individualized special patterns, give a “fractional anisotropy” score that predicts short or long term damage. MORE
