Imaging Pedicle Screws in Robotic Spinal Surgery
July 17, 2012 | Terry Sharrer
In spinal operations, surgeons often use screws into the pedicle arch of vertebrae to repair a fracture. In some cases, this is now done with a surgical robot, such as the “Renaissance” system from Mazor Robotics (Caesarea, Israel). Mazor has now added a 2-D imaging scan to its robot which can verify the proper (or improper) placement of the screws as soon as they are in place. The current procedure is to take a 3-D scan well after the operation has happened, when an adjustment is more problematic. MORE
