“Smart” Kitchen Countertops
August 31, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
It doesn’t take much imagination to see how this “smart” kitchen countertop, developed at Intel Labs Seattle, could be applied to any “countertop” in a hospital laboratory, operating room, or patient’s room. University of Washington graduate student Ryder Ziola, who pioneered this system named “Oasis,” found that a pico-projector and depth-perceiving camera could identify objects on the countertop and bring up information such as suggested recipes or turn on a timer. Waving a hand across the projected display clears the image. Obviously, a “smart” countertop has numerous possibilities in a “smart” home, especially for memory-challenged elders. MORE
