Determining the “Individuality” of Cells

Using microfluidic “cell culture chips,” Stanford University bioengineers have shown that cells are quite individualistic when it comes to signaling. Professor Markus Covert says “Think of cells as musicians in a jazz band,” based on his study with thousands of cells and multiple tests on each. Among other implications, this view substantiates the interpretation that the essential understanding in the life sciences is based on the cell, more than the gene or protein. MORE
