The Mexican Genome
March 2, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
Like the “Human Genome,” the “Mexican Genome” is an intellectual artifact, reflecting the broad strokes of mixing European, Native American and African populations over the past 500 years. Certain single nucleotide polymorphisms and gene expression patterns occur more frequently in the Mexican genome than in Old World foundings. Discovering those differences is the aim of a $65 m collaboration between the Broad Institute (Cambridge, MA) and the Carlos Slim Health Institute in Mexico City. As in other large genomic projects, the ultimate aim is to find more personalized health and disease risks within the target population. MORE
