Medical Bankruptcies: “Unless You Are Warren Buffett…”

The mortgage melt-down and personal bankruptcy crisis may not be due fully to borrowers’ risky behavior. A recent study reports that more than 60% of bankruptcies in 2007 were attributed, all or in large part, to medical problems. During long illnesses, people lost their insurance coverage when they lost their jobs. And with the high cost of healthcare, the unemployed-uninsured exhausted their assets. As Dr. David Himmelstein, professor of medicine at Harvard, said: “Unless you are Warren Buffett, your family is just one severe illness away from bankruptcy.” MORE
