Every year, Virginia Mason Hospital (Seattle, WA) CEO Gary Kaplan takes a group of his staff on a trip to Japan to visit Toyota factories so they can see how “the Toyota Process” might be adapted in healthcare. In one flow process, the hospital’s staff found ten things they might do differently with a newly admitted patient. In the hospital’s back clinic more effective approaches cut treatment time from 66 to 12 days.
