In deep brain stimulation, surgeons still have difficulty determining if and where neurotransmitters have been activated. Recently, though, the Mayo Clinic’s Neural Engineering Laboratory has developed a device that senses chemical concentrations of neurotransmitters locally. The device consists of chemical sensing electrodes that are implanted, and connected to a battery powered circuit board which can send the electrodes signals wirelessly to a remote computer for analysis.
